Believe: Open Source ready for prime time in UK.gov, says OGC
- "Open Source Software is now a viable and credible alternative for
government, says a report published yesterday by the UK's Office of
Government Commerce. The report, detailing the verdict on a series of
proof of concept trials of OSS [...] notes that cost
savings can be achieved, and signposts OSS' attractiveness as a
possible escape route from vendor lock-in." At last they realise
that government doesn't have to get the short end of the IT
stick. Vendors always seem to treat government contracts as some
gravy train and will do anything to hold onto them, well maybe they can
loosen that grip a bit!
Invest: Dell pushes Linux into the data centre - "Dell is to certify and pre-install Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server
9 on select Dell PowerEdge servers worldwide, the system vendor
announced today. [...] Dell customers will be
able to buy Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 9 with their single-and
dual-processor PowerEdge servers." Woo! See? Look! There must be demand for it, and Dell poweredge servers are nice
