A week away

Well they say a change is as good as a rest... I've spent the last week away, bouncing around the country buying a new car in Scotland, driving to Keele and driving to Bangor, Wales to spend a week at WiM.  Met some really great people, made some amazing new friends and got to see old ones; had a mini Barbados reunion.  Got a few more places to visit on my weekend trips now!  Spent most of the time in the technical group preparing for the concert, running about finding the right equipment, getting lost, and doing a spot of computer work for a BBC Wales subcontractor called Carreg Ateb to get some discount on the recording gear.  Feels like it's lasted about 3 weeks; though I find myself with a cold and the need to sleep for a few days

Also managed to find some time fix my web log.  Installed the anti-spam stuff, put on a spiffing new template and a nice picture of South Barrule I took a few summers ago.  Had to delete the post database as it didn't like being transferred between webhosts.  I've restored a few, the rest will be done later.  If you've linked to anything, I've changed how things are referenced so you will need to check your links.

Ever fancy working on a ship?

No I'm not talking about being a waiter, or swinging a rope from the yard arm.  "Take a used cruise ship, plant it in international waters three miles off the coast of El Segundo, near Los Angeles, people it with 600 of the brightest software engineers they can find around the world (both men and women), and run a 24-hour-a-day programming shop, thereby avoiding H-1B visa hassles while still exploiting offshore labor cost arbitrage and completing development projects in half the time they’d take onshore or offshore."  Sounds a bit mad, but it will probably work until the US gov't does something to make it unprofitable.  Might be an idea that would work in Britian too... just park a ship in the Thames Estuary outside the 3 mile limit.  Perhaps park it near Sealand and buy their Internet connection from them...  Full Article on SourcingMag.

Drinking Wessels

Vanquished Foe's Skull Makes Surprisingly Bad Wine Goblet DEATH MOUNTAIN- The skull of Wynric Lance, failed claimant to the throne of Eirea, does not make as good a wine goblet as Lord Shryke had imagined, the despot revealed Monday. "This damn thing is practically impossible to drink out of," said Shryke at a banquet celebrating the defeat of the Army Of Light. "You have to hold it just right to keep the wine from spilling over the parietal bones where they connect with the occipital. And there's a leak in the left temple. As much as I love the idea of using it, it's just stupid and impractical." Shryke concluded that while he might end up drinking from Lance's skull "occasionally, for show," he plans to retain his set of brass flutes for everyday use. theonion.com

New Hard Drive Tech

I think the next time I go and buy a hard drive I'll issue a press release or something... every damn time I buy a drive someone announces something that's going to drive up capacity.  I recently bought a pair of 200gb drives for a nice RAID1 mirror, now Hitachi are making a big song and dance about "Perpendicular Recording".  In case you're confused in any way about how this works you can see the somewhat surreal flash animation which explains it.
